Herbalism

Herbalism is the use of plants to support the body in healing. The people/plant partnership is one of the world’s oldest healing relationships. Herbalists are experts in botanical medicine, working with herbs to initiate, support, and accelerate the healing process. In the short-term herbs provide immediate symptom relief. In the longer-term herbs act to resolve deeper more chronic issues. Herbalists have extensive training in the use of herbs. Their knowledge is more comprehensive than that of other practitioners who may also use herbs.

Herbs guide the body away from the patterns that lead to disease. They nourish body systems. At their most healing plants nudge us, gently helping us to correct course. Herbalists work with plants to empower people.  Plants support us as we prioritize healthy choices in every area of life. When the basic needs of the body are compromised – no one can be at their best. When we address stress, sleep, exercise, and nutrition – many diseases will resolve. Herbs support and strengthen us as we work to make more positive choices.

Each of us is here for a purpose. Fulfillment of that destiny is easier when we are as resilient and healthy as we can be. Health is the journey of a lifetime. There can never be perfection. Some days will be more successful than others. On bad days – forgive yourself. The next choice is another opportunity. Be loving and accepting of yourself. The choices you make and act on today are the foundation for health in the future.

“The people/plant partnership is one of the world’s oldest healing relationships.”

Herbalism in Canada

In Canada herbalists are not regulated. In Ontario an herbalist who meets the educational standards of the Ontario Herbalists Association can register with them as a professional member. Their mission is to promote excellence in all aspects of herbalism. They maintain rigorous standards and there is an annual commitment to continuing education in order to maintain professional membership. Take some time to find an herbalist you are comfortable with. This is a person with whom you will be working closely together. How many years of experience do they have? How did they come by their knowledge? The Ontario Herbalists Association website has a listing of professional members which is an excellent place to start.
